What does an advocate do?

I can help you through the inclusive education process in many ways:

  • Assist in understanding your child’s educational rights within the BC context
  • Assist with understanding policies and procedures related to your child’s education
  • Interpret assessment reports
  • Evaluate current and proposed IEP goals, objectives and supports
  • Evaluate any other school plans such as safety or behaviour plans
  • Suggest appropriate services, programs, accommodations or modifications to meet your child’s needs
  • Review progress monitoring and assessment data
  • Prepare you for IEP meetings
  • Attend IEP meetings virtually
  • Draft communications to school/district personnel
  • Assist with the dispute process, including providing advice on when to escalate concerns or seek an appeal
  • Assist with transition planning including kindergarten entry, middle school and high school or other school placement changes

Many factors go into the total cost of advocacy services for a specific family. Services are billed hourly, so you will be charged only for the actual amount of time spent working for your child. A detailed invoice is provided at the end of each month.

Advocacy services are $125 per hour. This includes:

  • Reviewing educational records and assessments
  • Research
  • Writing and reviewing correspondence
  • Meetings and phone calls with the family
  • Attending school meetings

The are no guaranteed outcomes when it comes to the school system, but I can guarantee I will work hard on behalf of your child to achieve their right to equitable access to education.
